Tutorial: FTP with Smart FTP

Using Smart FTP
When you connect to your site in Smart FTP, you will be looking at the directory structure of your account, just like the one below.

FTP Console
To transfer files, you will need to open a view of your local files. To do this, go to FTP > Local Browser. Tile the windows so you can see them both, and in the local browser, browse to the directory your website is in by double-clicking on folders to open them. You can use these windows just like Windows Explorer.

Transferring Files
To transfer files between your computer and your account on the remote server, set up your console like the example above. Have the directory that you wish to upload to in the FTP window and the directory you wish to upload from in the local browser.

To upload a file, just click on it and drag it from the local browser to the FTP window. You can also click and drag from your desktop or Windows Explorer. To download files from the server to your computer, click on them in the FTP window and drag them into the local browser window.

You can also download, upload, view and change permissions on files by right clicking on them.

Subdirectories
To create subdirectories within your web directory on your account:
  • In the FTP window, browse to the directory you'd like to create a new directory in
  • Right-click in the window, and select New > Folder.
  • Type in a name for your new folder.

That's all there is to it! If you have any errors, they will be displayed in the command pane at the bottom.
